Happy Mother’s Day!!!

Happy Mother’s Day to all you mothers out there (that tickled me for some reason haha)!!

You know it’s not a proper Mother’s Day without a brief history lesson. But, instead of a long, boring paragraph, I will give you five facts about Mother’s Day

1. Mother’s Day is actually celebrated around the world. Countries like Kenya, Costa Rica, and New Zealand have adopted the holiday but with different customs. You can read more about that in this article from Mid Valley News.
2. Mother’s Day was created in 1908 by Anna Jarvis in order to honor her mother, Anna Reeves Jarvis,and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914 during the Presidency of Woodrow Wilson.
3. The celebration of Mother’s Day has been traced back to ancient Greece and Rome, where the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele were honored.
4. Mother’s Day in America can be traced back to a number of years before the Civil War. In West Virginia, “Mothers’ Day Work Clubs” were created in order to teach women how to properly care for their children.
5. Although Anna Jarvis worked so hard to make Mother’s Day an official holiday, by 1920 she began to despise the holiday because she could not stand the way the holiday had become commercialized and impersonal. Jarvis, who passed in 1948, died regretting she ever created the holiday.
