To Hit or Not to Hit?

I usually never watch The View, but I managed to catch the episode when the women were discussing the Stephen A. Smith controversy with him discussing football player Ray Rice’s suspension after he was caught on camera dragging his then fiance out of an elevator unconscious. If you want to read the whole story on that, here’s an article from Yahoo! that explains the situation. The video below also shows Smith’s and Goldberg’s comments.

Now most of the women on The View said that Stephen Smith had no place discussing the topic and was wrong in his belief that it was okay for men to hit women. Whoopi Goldberg, however, disagreed. And, honestly, I understand why.

Goldberg and Smith weren’t condoning men beating women; they were simply stating that females don’t need to go around hitting on guys and not expecting to get hit back. No, it isn’t right to hit women; everyone, I hope, knows that. But we as women need to remember that not all men where taught that or care to keep that principle in mind. The whole thing honestly sounds like such an elementary idea, so I don’t understand why people are arguing so much over it.

Let’s be real here: if you choose to fight a man, be prepared to be fought like a man. Now if your life is on the line, you need to defend yourself, but don’t just roll up on him just because you have something to prove. Don’t go up and smack him around, and then when you get popped you wanna call the police. For every action there is a reaction. Nobody should be hitting on anybody, period.

And like Sherri Shepherd said, I don’t understand how that woman, after being done like she was by him, was able to go on and marry him that next week. I don’t know about you guys, but I don’t care if he was my fiance; this man knocked me out and dragged me out of an elevator….AND if was caught on camera! And to me, how do we know his hasn’t happened before? I couldn’t marry him. I would have to at least postpone the wedding so I could get myself together.

What do you guys think?

  1. I think you a valid point, every action = reaction. I too wouldn't have married him maybe like you said postpone and figured things out because no matter the promises if he hit you once he will most certainly do it again but saying that some women should stop instigating it cause like you said not all men were taught to be Prince Charming

  2. have you seen the video where there is a girl attacking her bf in public and everyone just laughs at it or is entertained.. but when they reverse the roles people step in and tell him to stop. it's really interesting how society accepts women beating men but not vice versa.

  3. I'm sorry, if someones going to hit you, walk out on them? I couldn't care less if you love the guy, if it's totally unprovoked and he's jealous or whatever, he doesn't deserve you. That being said, what kind of a woman would hit a guy anyway?! Definitely no one I know!

  4. I totally agree. I really don't feel like anyone should hit anyone, and that maybe if a chick chooses to throw a punch at a guy, he should be allowed to defend himself accordingly.

  5. I don't think anyone should hit anyone… man or woman. I agree that a woman shouldn't be able to beat on a man simply because she's female – but if there's any way to restrain a person without harming them I'd rather see that course of action taken… sometimes that's not possible, but there's just so much darn violence….

  6. How about people learn to control their temper and then no one gets hit. I still think it's wrong for a man to hit a woman, but like Whoopie said, I'm not suprised either.

  7. Women go around saying how they wanted to be treated as equals but only when it's beneficial to them. I think many women set up double standards which isn't fair. Should you pick on someone your own size? Yes you should, but as a woman you can't go around hitting people and expect not to get punched back.

  8. I agree, nobody should hit anyone, no matter your gender. And I definitely agree with ananda, above – I wish the news would report more on good stuff. 😉

  9. I definitely agree that you raise a good point! it's not acceptable for anyone to beat anyone else….and no, i most definitely would not have married him the next week.

  10. I agree, it's about mutual respect. But men also need to realize how much larger and stronger they are than a woman most of the time and use their size to simply defend or restrain their attacker until help is called and they can press charges.

  11. I don't think that anyone should hit and not expect to be hit back. Women hitting a man is okay either. Don't start no s**t, won't be no s**t… right?

  12. Personally, Whoopi has a point: you cannot expect every man to have that restraint. The smart approach is to not do anything physically to that man that would give him an inclination to do the wrong thing. In short, don't hit that man. Also, make sure you are not dealing with the abusive type.

I was, however, surprised Ray Rice's woman still married him. It leads me to two things: either he is abusive anyway or she knew she was wrong at some point. Still, it makes me wonder about her disposition for her husband now that he is suspended.

  13. It's good to have a man'd point of view, so I appreciate your comment. Yea, his wife obviously has everyone scratching their heads right now.

  14. It's really so interesting how people react to these types of things. I feel like we've expanded so much over the years, but still not as much as we need to be. Guys are stronger, but how about just no fighting at all!

  15. I totally agree with you. If you hit a man you should be prepared to be fought like a man. I'm not the hitting type so I could not imagine hitting someone and expecting them to just take it.
