Weekly Blessing: Week 17: Tsunamis of Unforgiveness

This week’s blessing randomly came to me right after last week’s post! I personally feel that this came to me because of my struggles with forgiving myself, so not only will I be giving you guys something to think about. I will be preaching to myself as well.

When we repent for something, God forgives us and casts it into the sea of forgetfulness. However, some of us create our own tsunamis and bring everything back up because we can’t forgive ourselves and just let it go. 

Let me explain:

We all know that when Jesus died on the cross, He died for all of the sins of the world. He didn’t just die for the sins of the generation that experienced seeing Him walk the Earth. He didn’t just die for Adam and Eve, Moses, or David. He took on the sins of everyone – past, present, and future generations! However, we sometimes conclude that if we mess up, it’s the end of the world. This is the main topic of my message today.

God tells us these things about forgiveness of sin in the Bible:

• Isaiah 1:18 ~“Come now and let us reason together, says the LORD, though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” 
• Psalm 103:11-12 ~ “For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.”
• 1 John 1:9 ~ “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 

Micah 7:19 says, “He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.” This verse is telling us that when we ask God for forgiveness, He does just that and completely washes it from His memory, casting it into the sea of forgetfulness. However(I’m guilty of this too), some of us, in our worry and disappointment in ourselves, create these “Spiritual Tsunamis” or “Tsunamis of Unforgiveness,” and bring everything back up as if it was never cast out in the first place!

What is a tsunami? It is “a long high sea wave caused by an earthquake, submarine landslide, or other disturbance; an arrival or occurrence of something in overwhelming quantities or amounts.” If you are at the beach and the sign says, “Shark-infested waters,” would you go take a swim? No! This goes the same way: if the Lord has cast your sins into the sea and forgotten about it, don’t go wading in that water looking for the sin, making sure it’s gone! Doing that will only disturb the waters and cause you even more trouble. You know how tsunamis are, they start in the water but suddenly make their way onto the mainland and wash away everything in sight. If you keep holding on to that mistake, you will cause that disturbance, bringing it back up to only wash away all the progress you made in moving past it.

God wants you to live a full and happy life. One of freedom. Do you really think He would want you held in bondage by your past mistakes? Was Jesus’ death in vain? If you don’t let go of that sin, it was. Whatever that mistake is, let it go. God is waiting for you to come to Him and embrace Him. He knows we aren’t perfect; we don’t have to be. Just make an effort, and He will help you do the rest.
