Weekly Blessings: Week 38: Knocking on God’s Door

I’m sure the title of this week’s “blessing” has already slightly confused and possibly even intrigued you, so I’ll just get into it:
My niece loves my father. And when I say loves him, I mean LOVES him! She follows him everywhere, calls for him when he’s gone, and worries him to death every chance she gets. She is crazy about her grandaddy!
One day I was in the kitchen washing dishes when my niece ran through the room screaming, “Grandaddy…..Grandaddy! GRANDADDY!!!” My dad was sitting on the back porch relaxing, trying to catch a moment to himself, since she had been with him all day.
Finally she made it to the back door, but she couldn’t reach the knob to open it. So what does she do?
*BAM, BAM, BAM* “GRANDADDY! *BAM, BAM, BAM* “GRANDADDY!” 
This continued for a while until I just got tired of her constant hitting on the door. I dried my hands off, walked to the back, picked her up, and started carrying her back. Before I made it halfway through the kitchen, my dad opened the door and said,  “Come on, chap.”
I think you know what happened next.
Now, my point in telling you this story is this: after thinking about all that had just transpired it occurred to me: shouldn’t we be like this with God? Just hear me out:
Luke 11:1-13 and Luke 18:1-8 both discuss a parable Jesus told his disciples about prayer. The main thing that Jesus emphasized in both stories is to do what 1 Thessalonians 5:17 says – “pray without ceasing!” Yeah, it may be hard. Yeah, you may lose heart at times. Yeah, people may try to sway you. But don’t give up the faith! God will provide in due time! Evangelical Times provided a great article on this topic. You can read it by clicking here.

“Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.” ~ Matthew 7:7 (NLT)

Now, let’s compare the details of the parable to my story:
My niece = Christians
My father = God
Me = Adversity
The door = Prayer
Is it making more sense now?
My niece knew my father was behind that door and she knew that she needed to get to him, no matter what it took. She knocked and knocked and knocked, because she knew in her heart that, if she kept on knocking and pestering him about opening that door, he would. I was tired of all the screaming and banging, so I decided to go against what she believed and push her away. But, just as she thought all hope was gone, dad came in and gave her what she wanted! Doesn’t that sound familiar?
I thought so.
This may sound crazy, but God wants us to bother him! He’s our dad, He loves us, and He wants to be needed by us – of course He wants us to bother him! God wants to give us the desires of our heart (Psalm 20:4, Psalm 37:4), but he needs us to ask Him! He wants us to have a relationship with Him, meaning that we need to communicate(John 1:12, Hebrews 13:5, Galatians 5:25, Acts 17:27, Romans 5:8, 1 Peter 5:6-7, Psalm 86:15)! 
Remember that song, “Jesus is on the Main Line?” Well it’s telling the truth – tell Him what you want!
