25 Songs, 25 Days (Day 3 – A Song That Reminds You of One/Both of Your Parents)

This post is a tough one for me…

For those of you who don’t know, my dad actually passed away this past September after a hard battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

My dad was amazing. He had a tough exterior, but always had a soft spot for me, my mom, and my sisters. He is the reason I love to write – he wrote songs and poetry, and we bonded over our love of telling oral stories together.

I miss my dad so much, and there’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think of him, but I try to comfort myself in the thought that he’s no longer suffering, and now he can do all of the things he loved again. And one thing’s for certain – he’ll always be watching over me and my family.

My dad was a HUGE music lover. Dad was always singing or playing music around the house, and thanks to him and my mom, my sisters and are like human Spotify, lol.

I know we’re only supposed to pick one song, but when it comes to my dad, there are too many to choose from. So I will pick a few songs that remind me most of him.

I know you’re probably thinking that I picked this theme song because it was his favorite show, right? Wrong! My mom and dad always used to tell me that when I was a baby, my dad used to sing this song to me to put me to sleep. Other lullabies wouldn’t really work, but when he sang “In the Heat of the Night,” it would knock me right out!

“Cooling Water” was one of my dad’s favorite Gospel songs. He listened to it all the time and loved to sing it on karaoke. He even had this song as his ringtone!

This song was me and my dad’s song. We used to sing it together when I was little, and when I got older he would sing it and just smile at me. Man, I miss his smile…
Man…I could go on and on for days, but I think that’s all my heart can handle right now. I miss my dad a lot, but I’m thankful that his memory will live on in many different ways, including the music he shared with us. I love you, dad.
