5 Reasons Why Handwritten Letters Are Awesome
I could be biased because I’m a writer, or because I literally never get mail, but I am a sucker a good old-fashioned handwritten letter!
People are always so hung up nowadays on text messages, DMs, and “Ghosting(a term I just learned about here recently),” that nobody likes to stop and take the time to actually write anything, let alone a simple letter nowadays. I can guarantee that there are a good number of people who don’t even know how to properly write a letter anymore…
Still not feeling the whole letter-writing game? Here are 5 reasons why I still think handwritten letters are the most amazing things on this planet!
1. It’s Personal
The best thing about getting a handwritten letter is knowing that someone cared enough to do it! This person took time out of their day and busy schedule to sit down and actually write out their thoughts to you – that’s huge! Not a simple, “Hey wassup” via text, but an actual letter asking how you and your family are, what they are thinking about, and how they hope you write back. I love it!
2. It’s Cheap
Another awesome thing about writing a letter to someone is that it really doesn’t cost much. If you’ve been following me for a while you know I’m The Queen of Cheap, so anything I don’t have to spend a whole dollar on, I’m happy. Stamps are cheap and envelopes are just a few dollars for a whole box, so you can’t say that letter writing costs too much. And, depending on your cellphone plan, paying for a stamp may be cheaper than going over on your data limit.
3. It Lasts Longer
Unlike text messages that can be erased or DM’s that can be lost as soon as you delete your account, a letter lasts forever! The only person that can destroy that letter is you….and water or fire if you have an accident. You don’t need a third-party device to read it or keep it safe. Just put it under your bed, in a shoebox, or in your dresser drawer and you’re all good.
4. It’s Safe
Everybody wants to break into people’s phones and read their texts or take screenshots and share them with the world. Nah bro – letters don’t come with all those problems. The letter is addressed to you, you open it, and you hide it a safe place so no one else can get to it. Letters don’t require a complicated password that you have to remember – you just have to remember where you hid it! And as long as you know it’s hidden, nobody can hack into it!
5. It’s On A Different Level
Lastly, letters are just different. When a person writes a letter, you get more than just words – you get the whole experience! You can tell how a person feels by the way they write, you can see where they may have erased or scribbled something out, you can tell if they started writing and came back the next day to finish – it’s like you were with them the whole time! Text messages can be so vague and impersonal that it’s easy to forget that words contain emotions. Seeing a person’s handwritten words brings the whole level of experience up by 1,000!
Well, there you have it. There are the five reasons why I advocate for the handwritten letter. Sure, I could probably come up with more, but I think these are some pretty vaild points, right?
